Health and Nutrition
At Marsden Infant and Nursery School we value all members of our school community and seek to promote the health and wellbeing of everyone. We recognise that food and nutrition form an important aspect of our health and wellbeing which in turn contributes to our pupils being able to learn effectively.
A healthy diet
We all need to eat a balanced, healthy diet to keep up with the energy needed for daily life and the nutrients to help us fight infection and protect against health problems. What's a healthy diet?
The 'Eatwell' plate works for everyone over the age of 5 years old. It shows a diet that's low in fat and fibre. We should be aiming for;
- Plenty of fruit and vegetables. At least 5 portions a day.
- Plenty of potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy foods. If possible, try to go for wholegrain options such as wholemeal bread and brown rice.
- Some milk and dairy products. 2 or 3 portions a day.
- Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein. 2 portions a day.
- A small amount of foods and drinks high in fat or sugar.
Packed Lunches
Whilst most of our children enjoy a healthy, nutritious and freshly made school lunch, a small number bring their own lunch in the form of a packed lunch. We encourage children to bring in healthy packed lunches and the guide below provides some ideas for easy, healthy and budget-friendly packed lunch inspiration.
Please remember packed lunches must not contain nuts, or products that contain nuts. We are a Nut Free School.
We also insist that only water is included in a packed lunch; no juices or carbonated drinks please.
Choking hazards
For young children, food can be a choking hazard, especially when they can not chew their food well or they try to swallow it whole.
Choking can happen with any foods, but 'firm foods', bones and small round foods that easily get stuck in the throat present a higher risk.

Wonderful Water
At Marsden Infant and Nursery School, we realise the importance of staying hydrated. All childen are asked to bring their own water bottle to school which will be accessible throughout the school day. Children are encouraged and reminded to drink regularly. At lunchtime children have fresh water to accompany their school lunch.
School Milk
We are part of the Nursery Milk Scheme which provides children under the age of 5 years old, who attend approved day care facilities, a 189ml (1/3pint) serving of milk each day free of charge.
Children who are over the age of 5 years old have the opportunity to purchase milk via Cool Milk, our school provider. Parents should order milk for their child via the Cook Milk website.
Children eligible for means tested Free School Meals have a free serving of milk provided for them free of charge and this is ordered by school.
