Intent
We have a clear progression of skills and knowledge, ensuring that previous knowledge is embedded and built upon throughout their journey through school, allowing children to build up a timeline of events.
We aim to inspire our pupils to be curious learners who ask questions so they can know all about the past. We enable pupils to think critically, ask questions, use artefacts and historical information to develop their understanding and thoughts.

Implementation
Our implementation includes;
- Selecting and teaching subject specific vocabulary and their definitions and revisiting to aid knowledge retention. Key words will be displayed.
- Use of artefacts to promote children's curiosity and allow for exploration.
- Off-sire school visits to places of historical interest to bring the past to life.
- Guest speakers who have a knowledge and/or experiences of historical events.
- Use of sources to teach the difference between primary and secondary sources.
- Outdoor learning.
- Opportunities for cross-curricular learning to link subjects when this strengthens learning.
These are the historical topics that are covered throughout pupils' time at Marsden Infant and Nursery School.

Impact
Through our carefully planned and delivered curriculum pupils will develop their historical knowledge and skills of;
- Chronoligical understanding.
- Knowledge and interpretations.
- Historical enquiry.
As a result, children will;
- Know more, remember more and understand more about history.
- Have a passion for learning about their past and the past of others.
- Have more acceptance for other cultures, societies and countries.
- Understand and confidently us the key skills of chronology, knowledge interpretation and enquiry.
- Develop their own communciation skills and be able to use resources provided to construct their own opinions around events from the past.
- Be able to take life lessons away from history to influence their own thoughts, opinions and decisions about the future.
Cultural Capital
Through everyday interactions, sensory experiences, family stories and cultural routines, infants begin to build cultural capital. These early experiences support their developing understanding of the world, laying the foundations for historical awareness such as continuity, change and belonging.
British Values
Children are encouraged throughout our history lessons to explore the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance. The depth of our History curriculum fosters a genuine sense of enjoyment and curiosity, helping pupils develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others, and the wider world. Through this learning, they gain an appreciation of the diverse cultural influences that have shaped both their own heritage and the heritage of communities around them.
History Throughout School
Within our history lessons, children are given the opportunity to immerse themselves within the studied time period. One example of this is the use of artefacts and theme days which allow our children to be exposed to engaging, inspiring and memorable experiences which not only highlight the enjoyment that can be gained from exploring history, but also supports knowledge retention. Another example is school visits to places of historical interest and/or inviting visitors into school to share experiences with our children.
Local History
Marsden is a village with a rich history. Poets, Samuel Laycocl and Simon Armitage, were both born in Marsden with a lot of their work being inspired by the historial and geographical features of the area.
We work with members of our local community to support, promote and celebrate our local history.
